Count Down to Ascot
Royal Ascot is almost upon us once again and with the days counting down and the weather warming up, the pressure is on to finalise those last minute sartorial decisions.
Fashion and Royal Ascot have always been closely intertwined and ever since the iconic “Ascot” race scene featuring Audrey Hepburn in “My Fair Lady”, generations of race goers have been inspired to express themselves through their hats. Hats of all shapes and sizes are worn and whilst many may not be as extravagant as the statement black and white design sported by Audrey Hepburn, even a small bibi can make an impact when carefully chosen to “pull together” an outfit..
Obviously dress codes have to be adhered to and when these were re-enforced in 2012 to ensure that all hats worn in the Royal Enclosure had a base of no less than 10cm or 4inches, there was much panic and uncertainty amongst race goers. However, there were also many hat lovers (and milliners!) who breathed a sigh of relief. After all, it is one of the things that sets Royal Ascot apart from the many other race meetings and with so few hat wearing occasions, surely we should all embrace our inner Audrey at Ascot and celebrate the chance to dress up and sport our hats with pride.
